Variety: 60% Cabernet Sauvignonm 15% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc 5% Petit Verdot

Climate and vintage: vintage wine Ornellaia 2003 was characterized by abundant winter rains that allowed the vineyards to arrive in April with good water reserves in soil, a fact important in light scorching summer that he was preparing. In spring, the budding of the vines has been a bit ‘late, but with the drought (only 14 mm of rainfall from May to early September) and high temperatures, the vines had 1 week in advance of the bloom. In summer, maximum temperatures have arrived at 35 ° C between 20 and 28 July and 39 ° C between 3 and 9 August. Between 21 and 28 August, with a couple of weeks in advance, the youngest of the Merlot grapes were collected during two individual steps. In other vineyards at the beginning of September, tests confirmed a high level of sugar but a phenolic maturity still unfinished. The harvest for this red wine is distributed only on 10 September, after a couple of temperate which reduced temperatures, with the collection of clusters in perfect condition. The yields have been below expectations: about 30% less.

Vinification and aging:

The grapes for red wine Ornellaia 2003 were hand picked in boxes of 15 Kg ciascuna.La alcoholic fermentation took place partly in wooden vats and partly in stainless steel tanks at a temperature not exceeding 30 ° C. Each variety and each plot was refined. The maceration lasted for 25-30 days after which the wine was racked into French oak barrels (70% new French oak barrels, 30% second passage barriques) where he completed malolactic fermentation. The aging wine in oak barrels lasted for a total of 18 months in temperature-controlled cellar at the Estate. After the first 12 months of aging, has been doing the assembly, after which the wine was reintroduced into the barrels for an additional 6 mounths. The wine was then subjected to further refinement in bottle for 12 months before they are released .

Production areas: It’s called San Martino a vineyard belonging to the estate of Villa Cafaggio, which includes 40 hectares of vineyards, 85% of which is planted with Sangiovese. The vineyards of Saint Martin consists of 4 has a Sangiovese. The yield is limited to no more than 1 kg of grapes per vine. In July, just before veraison, the thinning is done (vintage green), leaving only the best grapes.

Harvest: The grapes are left to ripen until mid-October and checked daily to ensure they are harvested only when received by the complete and perfect ripeness. Only the best bunches are then selected by hand.

Winemaking: To ensure the extraction of soft tannins and color, the grapes are de-stemmed and undergo a very soft pressing. Selected yeasts are added to the must and the fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature not exceeding 30 ° C in small steel tanks. At the beginning of fermentation with frequent delestage then followed by several replacements for short periods during the duration of fermentation. The wine stays in contact with the skins for three weeks.

Aging: The malolactic fermentation is done entirely in new French oak barriques (Allier and Troncais). Follows a further refinement of 18 months in the same barrels and once bottled the wine is aged for at least 6 months prior to marketing.

Alcohol: 14%

Production: Annual production does not exceed 15,000 bottles.

Notes of Wine: The San Martino shows a garnet red color, with aromas of blueberry and blackberry. The palate recognize hints of berries and beautifully complemented by soft tannins and superb structure intense and persistent.

The nose is soft and enveloping, with a dense, rich fruit, backed by sweet scents of spices. This glass of great solidity, power and concentration of flavors, ending with a memorable stay in the mouth.

The 2002 harvest was certainly not the easiest climate and trend led us to perform continuous checks on the vine and a selection of grapes far more severe than in favorable years. After a promising spring and an early summer with high temperatures, July and August were marked by persistent rain. During the harvest, a brief sunny period still allowed to collect healthy and mature grapes. The quantities of grapes were very low compared to other vintages, but quality should not be underestimated.

Solengo is the expression of viticulture ARGIANO beyond the Brunello. The wine-growing area of the Estate of Argiano is truly magical in terms of climate and soil conditions and thus ecosystem. We tried to plant grape varieties that are not part of the tradition of Montalcino wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

The grapes were vinified separately. The maceration was 16 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon, 14 days for Merlot and Syrah for 12 days. The malolactic were easy and fast. Finally, we constructed a “vinaggio” with equal proportions among these three qualities of wine.

The wine aging in wood began in late January where he improved his balance polyphenols for fourteen months in new barrels of the best tonnellerie French. Without being filtered, but for simple decanting, the wine is bottled in the past, for the completion of the bouquet.

Total acidity: 5,60 g / l

Total polyphenols: 3.05 g / l expressed as gallic acid

Total dry extract: 33,30 g / l

Alcohol: 14% Vol
